90 Day Challenge

God's bread trails

God’s Bread Trails – Day 37: Light the World, Build the Kingdom (Year 2)

You’ve had those questions before … the ones that perplex you, nag at your mind, or have you wondering what to do next. You find yourself pondering on which path to take or trying to make sense of something important to you. Jesus said, “Ask and ye shall receive,” but the thing is we rarely ask and get an immediate answer … especially for the tough questions.

Those answers come a little at a time… in a bread trail. Do you know what I mean by God’s bread trails? It’s where answers come a bit at a time. How do you know when you’re on one of God’s bread trails? How do you know how to follow them and where do they lead? That’s what I’ll explore in this episode of the Light the World, Build the Kingdom Challenge.

How the Challenge Works

Step 1: Ask God each day, “What is one thing I can do to light the world and build the kingdom today?”

Step 2: ACT upon whatever He leads you to do. Go through the day EXPECTING for opportunities to arise.

Step 3: Document somewhere — in your private journal or on your favorite social media platform.

Step 4: Share! If you share publicly, please use our hash tags: #BuildTheKingdom and #LightTheWorldNow so I can cheer you on! If you’re going to be documenting privately, I recommend sharing your experience with a close friend or accountability partner. There is power in the sharing.

love, charity

Love – Day 36: Light the World, Build the Kingdom (Year 2)

The one characteristic that will transform your life more than any other… and how to get it. This characteristic is LOVE – the pure love of Christ… also known as charity.

What Is Love?

Paul described love in this way…

“Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity (the pure love of Christ), I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.

And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.

Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,

Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;

Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;

Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.

For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.

But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.

When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.” (1 Corinthians 13)

trouble at work

Trouble at Work? Day 35 – Light the World, Build the Kingdom (Year 2)

What to do when you’re having trouble at work or with a boss, or a difficult client? The Bible has some ideas for what to do when you have trouble at work. Speaking to the Colossians, Paul taught the servants how to deal with their masters. He said,

“Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God: and whatsoever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.” Collosians 3:22-24

While slavery and indentured servitude was common in biblical days, we don’t practice it now in civilized countries. This doesn’t mean we don’t deal with controlling bosses, co-workers or clients. In this episode, I share how we can apply these verses to modern employment and business situations.

How the Challenge Works

Step 1: Ask God each day, “What is one thing I can do to light the world and build the kingdom today?”

friends sharing

Sharing: Day 34 – Light the World, Build the Kingdom (Year 2)

Sharing generously and building friendships is one of the best ways to light the world. For example, today has been one of those days when an old friend came to my rescue just when I needed it. In the video below I share how a friend I’d helped with her business in the past, came back and gave me key insights and solutions for my biggest challenge today.

Part of Lighting the World is not worrying about competition or someone stealing your ideas or even comparing yourself with someone else. It’s generously helping and supporting others. When we do this, lighting the world pays rich dividends.

As we discussed in a previous episode, “Cast your bread upon the waters and after many days it will return to you.” Jesus said, “Give, and it shall be given to you, press down and overflowing.”

Don’t be afraid to be generous and share, it will always come back to you in the perfect time and way when you’re open to receiving. Here’s my story about how this happened to me today…

How the Challenge Works

Step 1: Ask God each day, “What is one thing I can do to light the world and build the kingdom today?”

Step 2: ACT upon whatever He leads you to do. Go through the day EXPECTING for opportunities to arise.

perspectives - blind men and the elephant

How’s Your Perspective? Day 33 – Light the World, Build the Kingdom Year 2

Whether we’re debating over politics or religion, or how things should run in a community or a family, most of us are like the story of the blind men and the elephant. Each “saw” the elephant through his own limited perspective. One said it was a fan, another a tree, another a wall, another a snake, another a rope. None of them were right, the truth was somewhere in the composite.

Most of the time, the challenges we face in our lives, families and society can only be solved when we see through multiple angles and perspectives — ideally through God’s eyes, because He is the only one who sees the full truth.

How the Challenge Works

Step 1: Ask God each day, “What is one thing I can do to light the world and build the kingdom today?”

Step 2: ACT upon whatever He leads you to do. Go through the day EXPECTING for opportunities to arise.

Stressed? Not Feeling Like Lighting the World? Day 32 – Light the Word, Build the Kingdom (Year 2)

Are you stressed? Overworked? Exhausted? Not feeling inspired, hopeful or energetic enough to be lighting yourself, much less lighting the world? If so, I know how that goes. Sometimes I’m just not in the mood either. I don’t believe God wants us stressed. Here are a few suggestions for how to light your own world so you have the energy and rejuvenation you need for you.

idea from God

Is This Idea from God? Day 31 – Light the World, Build the Kingdom (Year 2)

How do you tell if a choice you’re making is a good one? How do you know whether what you’re thinking about is an idea from God or is just your idea? How can you make decisions with greater confidence knowing they are the right ones for you and in alignment with what God wants for you? Here are some ideas…

God's love

God’s Love – Day 30 – Light the World, Build the Kingdom (Year 2)

God is love. But, what is love? And what does God’s love look like in your life? Are you recognizing it? For many, love means accepting someone as they are, not expecting them to change, not placing demands on them. For many, love means constant giving, supporting and no challenge. Some believe that Love is all “yes” and no “no’s.”

But is that really the highest and best love? Might a higher love challenge us to step up, to be more, to grow and achieve our full potential. Might true love set expectations and boundaries on behavior? A love that is both challenge and support can be the greatest love of all. God’s love is this type of love.

How the Challenge Works

Cast Your Bread Upon the Waters: Day 28: Light the World, Build the Kingdom (Year 2)

Cast your bread upon the waters and after many days it will return to you. In this segment of the Light the World, Build the Kingdom Challenge I talk about an experience I had where someone came to my rescue and how after many days, I had the opportunity to return the favor. Be willing to serve, lift and bless without though of return of reward. Life has a way of blessing you when you need it if you have sown good seeds into the world.

follow your bliss

Follow Your Bliss: Day 27 – Light the World: Build the Kingdom (Year 2)

Are you following your bliss? And is it okay and responsible to do so? There is a power you unleash when you follow your bliss. Doors open for you to serve others and yourself. When we follow the thing we are passionate about, others are attracted to us and what we are doing. It’s like the little puffer fish who creates an elaborate design in the ocean floor to attract his future mate. He feels compelled to make this design. I’m sure he doesn’t know why he’s doing it, but he can’t help but do it. In the process he attracts his future mate.

“Follow your bliss. If you do follow your bliss, you put yourself on a kind of track that has been there all the while waiting for you, and the life you ought to be living is the one you are living. When you can see that, you begin to meet people who are in the field of your bliss, and they open the doors to you. I say, follow your bliss and don’t be afraid and doors will open where you didn’t know they were going to be. If you follow your bliss, doors will open for you that wouldn’t have opened for anyone else.” – Joseph Campbell

destruction and loss

Why Destruction and Loss Are Good: Day 26 – Light the World, Build the Kingdom (Year 2)

Most of the time when something devastating happens, when there is destruction and loss, we automatically see that as a bad thing. But destruction is a natural part of the creative process. It’s a natural part of creating a higher level of order. In this segment I share a story about my mom and her house remodel and also lessons from the Children of Israel who wandered in the wilderness for 40 years before entering their promised land.

It’s like the Phoenix rising from the ashes. Without the fire and devastation, there would be no Phoenix rising.

peace

More Peace, Abundance & Wisdom: Day 25 – Light the World, Build the Kingdom

How would you like to increase your ability to make wise, inspired choices? Have more peace, joy, hope, wisdom and understanding? Would you like a more abundant life and feel more guided? Today I discuss how you can live with more grace, peace, wisdom and inspired connection to the ultimate source of all light and truth.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not… That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.” (John 1:1-5, 9-12)

power of praise

The Power of Praise – Day 24 – Light the World, Build the Kingdom (Year 2)

What do you do when facing something daunting? Do you pray, get a feeling of peace, but things still look overwhelming as you proceed forward? If so, take a cue from King Jehoshaphat! He’ll demonstrate what to do between the time of your peaceful answer and things working themselves out. The secret is found in the power of praise.

There is a difference between praise and gratitude. 2 Chronicles chapter 20 tells the story of King Jehosaphat and the Children of Israel as they came up against an insurmountable enemy. The king’s first instinct was to gather his people in prayer and fasting. As he did so, the answer came through a prophet of God that they would “not need to fight in this battle. Set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the Lord… Fear not, nor be dismayed; tomorrow go out against them: for the Lord will be with you.” (verse 17)

To his credit Jehosaphat took God at His word. Listen to the video below to find out how Jehosaphat harnessed the power of praise to calm the people’s fears and trust God for His promised miracles. As we model the steps Jehosaphat took, we can reap miracles in our own lives as well.

missing piece

The Missing Piece – Day 22: Light the World, Build the Kingdom

What do you do when you’re doing what you feel led to do, but there’s a missing piece? Maybe you don’t have all the people, resources or knowledge you need to complete the project. In this segment I talk about what to do when a piece is missing on something you feel led to do.

For example, let’s say you’re writing a book, but you’re not great at grammar and punctuation. You don’t know a good editor. Or you have no idea who would publish your book. What should you do? In this video I share a situation that happened to my husband and me that illustrates what to do when something important is missing from a task at hand.

Hope

Hope Through Music – Day 22: Light the World, Build the Kingdom

When you’re losing hope, when your life is falling apart, please find ways to hang on and have hope that things will get better. One of the best ways I’ve found to do that is with music.

In this segment I share several songs that have helped me keep going when things looked bleak and like nothing would ever come together for me. Sometimes you just need to hold on until the light can come.

Remember, if things look like they’re falling apart, hang on for the Glorious Unfolding!

Glorious Unfolding – Steven Curtis Chapman

Here are a couple more songs I mentioned in today’s segment that will help you find hope when things feel hopeless:

Just Be Held – Casting Crowns

Rocked in the Arms of God – Jana Stanfield

O Jerusalem

O Jerusalem – Day 20: Light the World, Build the Kingdom (Year 2)

As I play the piano, I face a large painting of the Savior overlooking Jerusalem. It's Greg Olson's "O Jerusalem" and it's not only one of my favorite paintings of Christ, but also one of my favorite verses - Matthew 23:37.

As I began playing, I looked at this painting and thought of the words to the verse. As I did, this melody came. I recorded it and then put the words to the melody. I know I'm not the most professional singer on the planet, but I do enjoy composing music and singing. So today's Light the World is this tribute to my Savior Jesus Christ.

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem
Thou that killest the prophets
and stonest them which are sent unto thee
how often would I have gathered thee --
Thy children together
even as a hen gathers her chickens
under her wings
and ye would not,
and ye would not.

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem
I would have gathered thee
And ye would not,
And ye would not,
And ye would not.

Embrace Your Unique Self – Day 18: Light the World, Build the Kingdom (Year 2)

Have you struggled with comparing yourself to someone else? Or wishing you fit in more? Or maybe you long to be your unique self and stand out? Maybe you’d like to be a bit of both – unique and fit in.

My husband, David Kuhns, joins me to talk about the human desire to both belong and to be unique. These opposing desires can sometimes clash or work together harmoniously. Here are some insights on how to both be unique and to fit in, and why it’s important that you be your true self.

prosper you

Plans to Prosper You: Day 17 – Light the World, Build the Kingdom (Year 2)

When we go through a series of hard challenges, we often get to the point where it’s hard to believe anything good can come into our lives. If we’ve lost a lot, we may constantly be waiting for the other shoe to drop. Knowing that God has plans to prosper you can give you the necessary faith so God can transform your life.

In the Old Testament, Jeremiah tells us that God has good plans for His children. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11 New International Version (NIV)

Each One, Light One

Each One, Light One – Day 16: Light the World, Build the Kingdom (Year 2)

Most of the time when you ask God what you can do to light the world today, He will give you the opportunity to do some small thing for a person He places in your path. Never under estimate the power of igniting just one other person’s candle. A word, a smile, a helping hand, can make a huge difference when timely placed in someone else’s life. when children struggle

Finding Peace When Children Struggle – Day 15: Light the World: Build The Kingdom (Year 2)

As a mother of six, I’ve had my share of times when my children struggled – either from their own choices or through no fault of their own. I know how tough it can be to watch a child have really hard times. It can be a helpless feeling. Over there years, I’ve used a visualization meditation to deal with the worry and stress when children struggle.

In this video I share my insights on being a parent of a struggling child and the meditation I’ve used to get me through. This is a visualization meditation I use to take my children to Christ in my mind.

From Anxiety to Peace – Day 14: Light the World, Build the Kingdom (Year 2)

Do you wake up in the middle of the night worrying about your problems? Do you suffer from anxiety and stress? Would you like to be able to go back to sleep? And feel more inner peace in your life? In this video, I share a visualization meditation I use to calm anxiety and fear. It works well when you wake up in the middle of the night worried about your problems and need help getting back to sleep.

If you would like to sleep easier or need some way to calm yourself so you can go back to sleep when worries wake you up, try this visualization meditation.

There is power in the sharing.

parable of the sheep and the goats

Parable of the Sheep and Goats – Day 13: Light the World, Build the Kingdom (Year 2)

Have you ever heard The Parable of the Sheep and the Goats? Jesus uses these two animals to contrast how the righteous vs the wicked treat other people. The crux of The Parable of the Sheep and the Goats is that God says to the righteous that they have fed, clothed and visited Him and therefore have a mansion prepared for them in heaven. When the righteous ask when they saw Him to do all these things, the Father answers, “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these, ye have done it unto Me.”

As we seek to light the world and build the Kingdom, it’s important to remember that when we are in the service of our fellow-beings we are only in the service of our God.

I had my own experience having goats and learned first-hand what Jesus meant by the Parable of the Sheep and the Goats. In this video I share the parable and my own insights from my days of goat-herding.

forgiveness

The Economy of God’s Generosity – Day 12: Light the World, Build the Kingdom (Year 2)

In a world that parades people across the media for things they said or did a decade ago, the stories Jesus shares about God’s generosity, forgiveness, and compassion are a completely foreign concept. In this video, I share three stories from Jesus that show us how to treat other people in today’s world.

surrender

The Supernatural Power of Surrender: Day 11 Light the World: Build the Kingdom (Year 2)

There’s an old gospel song that comes to mind when we think of the word “surrender.” “I surrender all, I surrender all; All to Thee, my blessed Savior, I surrender all.”

Most of the time when we hear the word surrender we think of giving up, losing the battle, or losing the war. We might think of being broken, bleeding, or our pride stomped into the ground. While this is a form of surrender, I do not believe this white-knuckled endurance or settling for a bad lot in life is what God ultimately wants from us. It is, perhaps, an important step along the way. But the type of surrender that unlocks miracles is not an anguished cry of “Uncle,” but a peaceful, trusting assurance that God knows best and that He wants to bring good things into our lives.

In today’s message I share my own experience of coming to this second type of surrender and how it worked miracles in my life.

count it all joy

Count It All Joy: Day 10 – Light the World, Build the Kingdom Challenge (Year 2)

The biggest lesson I’ve learned over the last year is the concept of Divine Compensation and that there are two sides to every situation… nothing is all bad, nor is it all good. As James 1 says “Count it all joy” when you face various trials. Everything is a compound in one. In this day’s video I share how I’ve learned to look at life realistically and to count it all joy.

finding gold

Finding Gold – Day 9: Light the World, Build the Kingdom Challenge (Year 2)

Finding gold seems like a hard thing to do, but what if it’s right under your nose?  Today I’m sharing a story I heard about a man and his two nephews who were panning for gold. The man mortgaged his farm to buy a gold mine. After several months of mining and finding only 3 ounces of gold, he called his sister in desperation, begging her to send her two sons to help him. He needed to find gold and he needed to find it fast.

This story will amuse and shock you. Hopefully, it will give you some insights on finding gold in your own life as well. Are you seeing the gold that is right in front of you?

ye are the light of the world

Ye Are The Light of the World: Day 8 – Light the World: Build the Kingdom (Year 2)

Jesus said, “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it gives light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16)

I hope you’ll share the Light the World: Build the Kingdom 90 Day Challenge with your friends and family. The small things you do have a rippling effect. Light is like a smile, it can be contagious. You smile at one person and they smile at another, and then they smile at someone else. Random acts of kindness create a ripple that go on. You may never see the good that you do, from one small act.

Whenever you set out to do something inspired, you’re most likely going to face opposition. You’re bound to be facing obstacles along your path. It may be your own limiting views, beliefs or fears. Or it may be opposition from other people or even the roadblocks of not knowing how to accomplish what you feel called to do.

This episode covers some insights from the story of Moses and the Children of Israel on what to do when you face opposition when you are traveling a path you feel inspired to travel.

Creativity - You are a creator

Creativity – Day 6: Light the World: Build the Kingdom (Year 2)

Creativity – not everyone believes they have it, but in reality, creativity is your birthright. You create every time you set a goal and go for it. You create smiles, laughter, hope, happiness, and beauty in your world. You are a creator, here to learn how to create your own life. You’re made in the image of the Creator. You’re here to have dominion and create your world. Today’s message shares some tips for harnessing your God-like creativity.

First, let’s look at that passage from Genesis where God created humans:

“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.” (Genesis 1:26-28)

Made in the great Creator’s image, you are here to create and have dominion over your world. Here are some ideas on how to model God in doing that.
